Nature-Inspired Snow Globe Craft

Many of you have been asking how we created the adorable snow globe gift pictured here and on social media! I was inspired to include this activity in our Celebrating through Nature series this year after receiving one as a gift last Christmas from a special explorer.

This gift is easy to make, and kids have fun "cooking" up their holiday potion before adding the final touches. If you need a gift for the grandparent who has everything, look no further!

What You’ll Need

  • A clean glass jar with a tight-fitting lid (recycled jars work great!)

  • A small photo, laminated or sealed with clear packing tape to make it waterproof

  • 2-4 oz clear glue per jar and water (clear glycerin and water work well, too)

  • A hot glue gun and glue sticks

  • Nature treasures: small pinecones, acorns, dried flowers, tiny branches, pebbles

  • Optional: natural mica flakes or finely shredded coconut for a snowy effect

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Gather Nature Treasures Head outside with your kids for a mini scavenger hunt to seek out nature treasures.

  2. Prepare the Photo Cut your chosen photo to size and seal it with clear packing tape or laminate it to waterproof. Attach the photo to a small, sturdy piece of craft foam or plastic to help it stand upright in the jar or leave excess laminate at the bottom of the photo to secure it with glue.

  3. Add the nature treasures and have fun watching or engaging with your explorers as they cook up a special holiday potion to gift to a loved one!

  4. Add Clear Glue, Water + Glycerin (optional) Add 2-4 oz of clear glue, 1 tbsp of glycerin and fill the rest of the jar with water.

  5. Add the Snow Effect (optional) Instead of traditional glitter, use finely shredded coconut, natural mica flakes, or even tiny white seeds (maybe sesame seeds?) for a more eco-friendly “snow.” Add just enough to create a gentle snowfall effect when the jar is shaken. This is something I didn't think of until now and I may see if my explorers want to add some to their jars!

  6. Assemble Your Snow Globe Screw the lid onto the jar tightly, ensuring no water leaks.

  7. Personalize the Jar Add a festive ribbon and a handmade tag or gift as is!

Why This Craft is Perfect for the Holidays

This nature-based snow globe combines creativity, outdoor exploration, and personal touches, making it a heartfelt gift for family and friends. Giving naturally nurtures empathy and compassion for others and brings us joy, too, when we see the happiness on the receivers' face. Not only does it capture the beauty of nature, but it also encourages kids to appreciate and repurpose natural materials.

Bonus Tip

For an extra special touch, add a drop or two of essential oil (like pine, cinnamon, or orange) to the water for a subtle holiday scent.
